Sophocles: 496 B.C. - 406 B.C.
Sophocles was born a mile northwest of Athens in 496 B.C. He studied all the arts, by the age of 16 he was known for his grace and beauty. twelve years went by and Sophocles was ready to compete in the city of Dionysia. At the competition he placed first.
He was an accomplished actor. Sophocles was the first person to add a third actor and he abolished the trilogic form. He is also credited for scene-painting. Sophocls served as an ordained priest for many years. Also, he served on the Boared of Generals. The Board of Generals was a commitee that administrated military and civil affairs in Athens.
Sophocles wrote over 120 plays, though only seven survived their entirety. Shortly after he finished the third addition to the Oedipus trilogy, Sophocles went to the underworld.
Summary of scene 4:
The coragus is emotinal about Antigone being led to her death. Antigone asks them to see her as a woman who will never marry and a woman who is about to die. The choragus says she is honorable; sickness nor war is brig her to her death. Antigone compares her situatoin with Niobe. Assuring her, the the chorus, tells her she will have a better afterlife. Yet Antigone feels as though she is being mocked. Antigone believes Oedipus has cursed her. She blames the curse for her fate to die, but the chorus blame her actions. The guards lead her to the place of her death.
